What is NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo, Nanowrimo, and Nano are all short for National Novel Writing Month. It is a the-writing-is-the-prize creative writing contest that happens every November. The goal is the write 50,000 words of a novel in 30 days.
For more information go to their website Here. or to the Nanowrimo Wiki Here.
Why do Nano?
This one has a lot of answers, and the answer is probably a little bit different for everyone. However, here are a few of the bigger ones.
Because it sounds like fun.
Because I've always wanted to write a novel.
Because I like the challenge.
Because I'm fighting writer's block.
Because I don't think I'll be able to write a novel.
Because I want to meet other writers in my area.
Can anyone do Nano?
Yes and no.
Yes, anyone in any country at any age can be a part of this challenge.
No, due to U.S. federal law you must be 13 years or older to legally sign up for the Nanowrimo.org website. However, there is a child-specific branch of Nanowrimo call The Young Writers' Program or YWP. Their website is Here.
What is an ML?
An ML, or Municipal Liaison, is a regular Wrimo from your region who stepped up and volunteered to organize some parties, set up some write-ins, send out emails full of information, and whatever other fun stuff they can come up with.
They are the people who can answer your questions, help you fix problems, and handle the drama as it comes up.
You can contact your ML at IndyML2010@gmail.com or Here.
What is a Write-in?
This is a meeting of one or more Wrimos in an effort to cheer each other on and get some writing done. Usually in a public setting, like Panera Bread.
"Official Write-ins" are any write-ins organized and run by the ML.
"Unofficial Write-ins" are all other write-ins.
How do I win Nano?
By writing 50,000 words in the month of November.
However, to officially win you need to have an account on either Nanowrimo.org or the Young Writers' Program website. Through out the month you can update you word count in your profile. This part is on the honor system. Then, starting on November 25th the word count validator goes live. This is a blank field in your profile where you can copy and paste the full text of your novel. If the validator counts more than 50k words, you have officially won and you get all the little winner web badges etc.
Note: The website saves nothing that is entered into the validator. No human beings see any part of the novel, nor is it stored in the server. Not because they don't think it's wonderful, but because no one wants you to worry about someone stealing your work.
